Why Volunteer?
When people think about volunteering, they often picture giving up a few hours to help at an event or support a good cause. While that's certainly part of it, volunteering has an impact that reaches far beyond the task at hand.
Every strong neighborhood is built by people who choose to invest in it.
Sometimes that means coaching a youth sports team. Sometimes it's planting a tree, picking up litter, helping at a community event, or sharing a few hours at the farmers market. Each act may seem small on its own, but together they create the kind of neighborhood where people feel connected, welcomed, and proud to call home.
Volunteering also helps build something that's harder to measure: relationships. Working alongside neighbors introduces people who might not have crossed paths otherwise. Those conversations often lead to new friendships, stronger community networks, and a greater sense of belonging.
The impact extends beyond the volunteers themselves. Community cleanups create more inviting public spaces. Volunteers help events run smoothly so families can enjoy them. Tree Stewards care for young trees that will provide shade, cleaner air, and beauty for years to come. Farmers market volunteers help connect residents with fresh food, local businesses, and one another. Every role contributes to making Old Brooklyn a healthier, more welcoming place.
At OBCDC, volunteers are part of nearly everything we do. Whether it's supporting neighborhood events, caring for green spaces, assisting with community programs, or lending a hand behind the scenes, their time and energy make many of our efforts possible.
You don't need special skills or a long-term commitment to make a difference. Sometimes showing up for just a few hours is enough to help a project succeed and to leave the neighborhood just a little better than you found it.
